Abstract The morphology
of two Neotropical oribatid mites new to Ecuador, Nothrus
niedbalai sp. n. and Nothrus becki
Balogh et Mahunka, 1981, is described and illustrated. A comparison
with similar species is included. N. niedbalai sp.
n. is similar to the Mexican N. magnus
Palacios-Vargas et Iglesias, 1997 in body size, notogastral sculpture
and length and shape of notogastral setae. Nothrus
becki is similar to N. peruensis
Hammer, 1961 in the distribution of notogastral setae, and may be a
junior synonym of this older species. Specimens were found in samples
of moss, soil, litter and detritus from stones, rocks and below shrubs
at creek level, along steep roadsides in shrubby secondary forest, in
dried-out tussocks in closed forest stands, and in relatively dry grass
on cattle pastures. All samples were collected in the provinces of
Pichincha and Cotopaxi, at 2800–3900
m a.s.l.
