On 13 December 2006 at 1842 h, I was photographing a hare (Lepus
europaeus) feeding in the field opposite my house (41° 11′S,
174°55′E). Suddenly, it turned
and stood upright on its hind toes with ears erect. I had never seen
this posture in over 40 years of observing hares, including several
hundred hours of study by day and night (Flux 1981, 1997).
