Sustainable Aotearoa New Zealand (SANZ)

Forum on Sustainable Development

WELLINGTON, FRIDAY NOVEMBER 19th 2004 

The Sustainable Aotearoa New Zealand (SANZ) Forum on Sustainable Development is to be held on Friday November 19th, 2004 at the Royal Society of New Zealand, 11 Turnbull Street, Wellington. 

SANZ, aware that the Sustainable Energy Forum (SEF) is holding their conference on 19th -20th November in Wellington, has arranged a joint first session with SEF.  This session is at Rutherford House, Victoria University, Bunny Street, Wellington, beginning 9:00 with a 'meet and greet' and talks starting promptly at 10am.  This venue is approximately 10 minutes' walk down Murphy Street from Science House.

Attendees are warmly invited to the Public talk at 6:30 "Understanding the Energy Efficiency Resource Base - it's bigger than most people can imagine." by Alan Pears, RMIT University, Melbourne.  This will be held at Rutherford House, Bunny Street. In addition, SANZ participants may register for the Saturday sessions for half the conference rate at SEF, see details at the bottom of this page.

10 – 12.30 pm      Sustainable Development Proramme of Action – Sustainable Energy Issues
        o Outline of Government’s Framework – Roger Perkins (Ministry of Economic Development)
        o Invited commentary – John Blakeley, John Peet (Sustainable Aotearoa New Zealand), Ian Shearer (Sustainble Energy Forum),  and others
        o Small-group discussions on advancing sustainable development and sustainable energy

SANZ VENUE Science House, 11 Turnbull Street, Thorndon

SANZ Lunch is from 12:30 - 1:30 Science House (10 to 15 minute walk up Murphy St from Rutherford House; Registration required - see below)  Please do not park in the private Wilsons Carpark between Halswell and Turnbull Streets - you will be towed, we are sorry to say.

1.30 – 3.00 pm.  SANZ and its future directions and activities - workshop (see agenda for workshop below)
3:00 – 3.30 pm.  Incorporating sustainability into planning, development and engineering - a case study in Waitakere City: Carol Boyle
3:30 – 4:00 pm.  National policy initiatives on Sustainable Development   Paper and discussion. Klaus Bosselmann
 

Finally (approximately 4pm) wind up with ice breaker/social function, courtesy of SANZ. 

And don't forget, participants are welcome to the public talk down the road back at Rutherford House 6:30 (10 minute walk approx) details above.

Registration is only $20  ($10 for unwaged) payable to Royal Society of New Zealand, please post cheques to: SANZ Forum, P.O. Box 598, Wellington.  Please include your name, address, telephone, and if appropriate, your e-mail and organisation affiliation.  We will post briefing papers before the conference to your e-mail address, unless you indicate that you wish them to be posted in hard copy to your snail-mail address. 

If you or your organisation is attending a Forum for the first time, please send a brief outline of your organisation and its interest in sustainable development to Florence  florencemicoud at xtra.co.nz.

 

Purpose of Sustainable Aotearoa NZ Forum

The purpose of this forum is to:

  • Update groups on Government policies and actions on sustainable development.
  • Present papers on aspects of sustainability.

Briefing papers on these issues will be distributed to registered participants before the meeting.

Agenda for SANZ workshop 1:30-3pm

It is proposed to have SANZ incorporated with its constitution, an Executive Officer, and a membership by the end of the year. You are welcome to be part of the founding membership of this organisation. This workshop will invite your input to achieve these goals:

  • SANZ and its future directions and activities.
  • First ‘Sustainable Aotearoa New Zealand (SANZ)’ AGM and election of Management Board*.

* Since the last Sustainable Development Forum in March 2004, SANZ was formed with an Interim Management Committee, which has agreed a constitution and obtained funds to employ an Executive Officer.

Objective of Sustainable Aotearoa New Zealand

SANZ will actively contribute to the goal of New Zealand society achieving long term sustainability.

 

Sustainable Energy Forum Saturday Programme

People are welcome to attend the Saturday session of the Sustainable Energy Forum at Rutherford House, including: Making Markets Work - Climate Change Developments - Energy Supply and Use.

SEF is offering a one-day registration rate, (half their conference rate) for SANZ participants.  Please visit their website for more detailed programme information: http://www.sef.org.nz/conferences.html

If registering for the Saturday sessions only, quote 'SANZ single-day rate', when registering.
